YouTube reservation ads: what a fixed CPM booking gives and takes

The short answer

YouTube reservation ads are Video campaigns that book an approximate number of impressions at a CPM fixed when the quote is accepted, instead of bidding in the auction. Google lists skippable, non-skippable, bumper, Shorts and Masthead formats, one per campaign. The trade is predictability for control: no pausing, one ad group, and fewer targeting options.

Key takeaways

  • A reservation campaign locks a CPM at booking, while an auction CPM moves with bids and competition.
  • Each reservation campaign carries one ad format and one ad group, and Google says it cannot be paused or switched to auction once saved.
  • Premier reach is the route to YouTube Select lineups, first position and Pause ads; Standard reach books inventory without those features at a dynamic price.
  • Google's setup page documents placement targeting in reservation only for picking a Select lineup, so a custom channel list belongs in an auction campaign or a guaranteed deal confirmed with the platform.

What are YouTube reservation campaigns?

A reservation campaign is a way of buying YouTube inventory in advance. Google's reservation setup guide (opens in a new tab) says these campaigns "allow you to buy an approximate number of impressions for a Video campaign at a fixed Cost per thousand impressions (CPM)." The buyer asks for a quote, the system prices the requested impressions against the targeting and dates, and the CPM is secured once the quote is accepted or held.

Definition

Reservation (YouTube)
A Video campaign bought on a fixed rate for a planned volume of impressions, booked through a quote, rather than won impression by impression in the auction. Google says reservation is available to some advertisers only and points others to a Google sales representative for access.

Google's overview of reserved media placements (opens in a new tab) describes three billing methods. Under CPM, the advertiser is "charged a fixed rate for every 1,000 delivered ad impressions" and "you'll only be charged for impressions actually delivered." CPH, a flat rate for hours booked, applies to some Masthead bookings, and CPF, one flat fee per flight, is used only for YouTube Sponsorships. This page covers the CPM route.

Which formats can be bought on reservation?

The reservation setup guide lists five formats for reservation: skippable in-stream, non-skippable in-stream, bumper, Shorts and Masthead. Its auction list adds in-feed video, outstream and audio in beta. Only one ad format can be used per reservation campaign, so a plan that mixes bumpers and skippable spots needs two bookings.

Format or featureReservation routeWhat Google's pages add
Skippable in-streamStandard reach or Premier reachAlso sold in the auction
Non-skippable in-streamStandard reach or Premier reachAlso sold in the auction

ShortsReservation, with YouTube Select Shorts named on the Shorts reservation pageFirst Position can make the campaign's ad the first one a viewer sees; Google says it does not apply on YouTube TV

Pause adsPremier reach onlyStatic images on connected TV devices, "only available in YouTube Select lineups"; Canada and the United States are on the country list
In-feed video and outstreamNot listed for reservationListed for the auction only

Google's Pause ads page (opens in a new tab) says these static image ads "appear 10 seconds after the viewer pauses a video." Its Shorts reservation page (opens in a new tab) sends buyers to a Google Ads representative and lists no countries. Lengths and skip rules sit in the YouTube ad formats guide.

How does reservation buying differ from auction buying?

The difference is less about price and more about what the buyer can change after launch. An auction CPM floats with bids and competition, and the campaign can be paused and restructured day by day. In reservation, the setup guide says the CPM "is secured when you reserve the campaign", and several levers are given up in exchange.

Quote holds are the other timing rule. The setup guide says a held quote is kept "for 72 hours or 14 days", depending on campaign eligibility. A copied campaign needs a fresh quote before it can serve.

What is the difference between Standard reach and Premier reach?

Google's setup guide splits CPM reservation into two products. For Standard reach it says: "To reserve YouTube inventory without leveraging special features or premier solutions, select Standard reach." These campaigns "will always be priced dynamically, and quoted CPM will fluctuate until booking is confirmed or held." For Premier reach: "To access YouTube Select and other premier offerings, select Premier reach." Select lineups carry a fixed or a dynamic price depending on the geography targeted.

Google's reservation overview (opens in a new tab) describes Select lineups as reservation products for eligible clients "to target among the top 1% of popular channels", and the Reach Planner page (opens in a new tab) adds that "Lineup targeting may vary by country." First position serving is available "only via reservation premier reach." Lineups are covered in the YouTube Select guide, and the wider cluster in the YouTube channel planning hub.

Can reservation campaigns use channel lists?

Not in the way an auction campaign does, based on Google's current help pages. The reservation setup guide mentions placement targeting once: "For Premier reach only, use placement targeting to select your YouTube Select lineup." It does not describe adding a planner's own channel list to a Standard reach booking, though it does ask buyers to set negative placement lists before setup.

Three other routes exist for a buyer who needs named channels. An auction Video campaign accepts channel and video placements; Google's Video targeting setup page (opens in a new tab) says to "Add or select a minimum of 10 YouTube channels or videos." YouTube Sponsorships, per Google's content suitability page (opens in a new tab), "can only be bought on a reservation basis through your Google Representative." Display & Video 360 guaranteed instant deals (opens in a new tab) "reserve a targeted number of impressions at a fixed CPM" and list Placements among their core targeting.

When does reservation buying fit a plan?

Google's reservation overview says reservation "is best for promoting brand awareness." That points to briefs where a fixed date and a planned volume matter more than steering the flight: a launch day, a release weekend, a seasonal event. It fits less well where the plan depends on a tight custom channel list, frequent creative tests or stopping spend quickly.

Signs a brief suits a YouTube reservation booking

  • The flight has fixed dates tied to an event, a launch or a release.
  • The client needs a planned impression volume and a known CPM for budget approval.
  • One format carries the message, or the buyer is willing to book one campaign per format.
  • Creative will be final and approved at least 2 business days before the start date.
  • A Select lineup or YouTube's own channel choice is acceptable, or a guaranteed deal route has confirmed the custom channel list.

Fictional example

A summer release slate for a Texas cinema chain

A fictional regional cinema chain with theaters in Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston wants YouTube video around the opening weekends of its summer releases, in English. The client's finance team wants each weekend's volume fixed before the season starts, and the creative for each title is locked two weeks ahead.

The planner splits the brief in two. Opening weekend bursts go into reservation: one Standard reach campaign per title for the skippable trailer cut, plus a separate bumper booking, each quoted and held while the client approves. The always on layer between releases goes into an auction Video campaign with a 40 channel list of film review and movie news channels, where channels can be swapped and paused by title.

The plan file records which campaign carries the channel list, the quote hold dates, the creative deadlines that guard against the 4 day expiry rule, and the client's sign off that reservation campaigns cannot be paused.

How does PlacementGraph support a plan that mixes reservation and channel buys?

Frequently asked questions

Can a YouTube reservation campaign be paused?

No. Google's reservation setup guide says a buyer can't pause the campaign or change the buying plan to Auction after saving it. Ads can be switched at any time as long as one ad stays active and approved. A flight that may need to stop at short notice belongs in the auction.

How long does a YouTube reservation quote stay valid?

Google says a held quote is kept for 72 hours or 14 days, depending on campaign eligibility, with 14 days the maximum for fixed price campaigns and 72 hours for dynamically priced ones. Editing the campaign requires a new quote, so changes late in approval reset the clock.

Can every advertiser book YouTube reservation campaigns?

No. Google's setup guide says reservation is available to some advertisers only and directs others to contact a Google sales representative for access. The account also has to accept the reservation terms in Account settings. Shorts reservation and several premium options are likewise handled through a representative.

Do account content suitability settings apply to reservation campaigns?

For Standard and Premier reach, Google asks buyers to re-quote after changing account level settings such as content suitability. YouTube Sponsorships are the exception: Google says they bypass account level content suitability exclusions and run on Moderate inventory even if Limited is selected.
