What is YouTube Select, and how do buyers use lineups?

The short answer

YouTube Select is Google's set of packaged lineups of popular YouTube content, which Google describes as the top 1 percent of the most popular channels in a market. Buyers reach lineups through Premier reach reservation campaigns in Google Ads or instant deals in Display & Video 360, with in-stream, bumper and Shorts formats, priced by lineup and country.

Key takeaways

  • A lineup is a package Google assembles, such as Run of Lineups or Food & Recipes, and lineup availability varies by country.
  • In Google Ads, lineups are targeted only through Premier reach reservation campaigns; Display & Video 360 offers guaranteed and non-guaranteed instant deals.
  • Google documents a full membership list only for some lineups, such as the Top US Sports Podcasts lineup, through the sales team.
  • A custom channel list gives the buyer the choice of every channel; a lineup gives packaged popular content with reservation terms, and each has real tradeoffs.

What is YouTube Select?

Definition

YouTube Select lineup
A package of popular YouTube content that eligible advertisers can target in a reservation campaign. Google's reservation overview (opens in a new tab) says lineups let eligible clients target channels among the top 1 percent of popular channels in a market.

YouTube Select is a buying product, not a targeting setting any campaign can switch on. The reservation setup guide (opens in a new tab) says YouTube Select is only available via reservation Premier reach, and the Reach Planner help page (opens in a new tab) says lineups can only be targeted with Premier reach campaigns using skippable in-stream, non-skippable in-stream, bumper or Shorts ads. Lineups are not available for Demand Gen or Masthead campaigns in Reach Planner.

How are YouTube Select lineups built?

Google assembles the lineups; the buyer does not. Google's pages name examples by format, and Reach Planner warns that lineup targeting may vary by country, so a buyer should ask a Google representative for the latest list in each market. Lineups can be added by ID through the lineups picker in Reach Planner, and the representative can help find the IDs.

The category name is a label, not a description of every video. Google's own sports podcast page says premium sports podcasts often cover a wide range of free flowing topics within one episode and can occasionally touch on sensitive or unexpected subjects. A planner should read a lineup the way it would read a channel: from the content inside it, not from its title.

How is YouTube Select bought?

There are three documented routes, and each one sets different terms for price, delivery and minimums. In Google Ads, the buyer creates a reservation campaign with the Premier reach buying method and selects the lineup through placement targeting. The setup guide says lineups have either a fixed or a dynamic price depending on the geography targeted, and that a reservation campaign can have only one ad format and one ad group.

RouteDeliveryPriceRules to know
Google Ads, Premier reach reservationReservedFixed or dynamic by lineup and geographyQuote held up to 14 days for fixed rates, 72 hours for dynamic; first position in-stream requires a lineup
Display & Video 360, guaranteed instant dealReserved impressions at a fixed CPMInstant rate, or agreed or market rate in some countriesFlight of at least 24 hours; several lineups in one deal may return no quote, so try one per deal
Display & Video 360, non-guaranteed instant dealNot reserved, so full delivery is not guaranteedBid at a fixed CPM at or above a floorShorts must target a lineup to get a quote; custom intent and combined audiences unavailable

The Display & Video 360 terms come from the guaranteed instant deals page (opens in a new tab) and the non-guaranteed instant deals page (opens in a new tab). For Canadian and US buyers the guaranteed page is the one to read: among the countries it lists for in-stream lineups, Canada, Japan and the United States require contacting the account manager and use an agreed or market rate rather than an instant rate.

Forecasting a lineup in Reach Planner

  1. Choose the buying method. Select Reservation, then Premier reach (CPM), and choose Add Lineups.
  2. Add the lineup by ID. Use the lineups picker; a Google representative can supply IDs for the market.
  3. Keep audiences in a separate campaign. Google says a lineup and an audience in one campaign forecast only their overlap, and suggests two campaigns in the plan.
  4. Remove video partners if only the lineup is wanted. Campaigns targeting lineups and Google video partners can serve on the lineups and all video partners.
  5. Keep the flight to 92 days or less. Reach Planner forecasts cannot extend beyond 92 days and are estimates, not guarantees.

Can a buyer see which channels are in a lineup?

Sometimes, and the documentation is specific about when. For the Top US Sports Podcasts lineup, Google says the sales team can provide the full lineup list and that channel exclusions can be added in the campaign's channel placement settings. The Google Ads and Display & Video 360 pages checked on October 21, 2026 did not describe a public, downloadable membership list for other lineups.

That leaves a buyer two documented tools: asking the representative for the membership of the exact lineup and market, and excluding channels the brand refuses. Write the answers into the plan, because a lineup's contents can change between the proposal and the flight. The YouTube content exclusions guide explains how account and campaign exclusions work.

Questions to put to the Google representative about a lineup

  • Which country and language is the lineup defined for, and what is its lineup ID?
  • Is the lineup built from whole channels or from playlists of episodes?
  • Is a full membership list available for this lineup, and on what date was it prepared?
  • Which channel exclusions does the chosen setup accept?
  • Is the price fixed or dynamic for the targeted geography, and how long can the quote be held?
  • Which formats does this lineup accept in this market?

When should a buyer use a custom channel list instead?

A lineup and a custom channel list solve different problems, and neither is better in general. A lineup packages popular content with reservation terms. A custom list, built from the brief and added as channel placements in a Video or Demand Gen campaign, lets the buyer choose and justify every channel. The YouTube channel list guide covers building one.

A plan can use both. A launch can reserve a lineup for guaranteed reach while a separate auction campaign carries a custom list on specialist channels the lineup does not cover. Keep them as separate lines so each has its own evidence and reporting.

What does a lineup decision look like for one brief?

Fictional example

Battery lawn and garden tools in British Columbia

An unnamed fictional maker of battery powered lawn mowers and hedge trimmers plans a spring flight in British Columbia, in English, with a CAD budget. The agency's Google representative proposes a lineup on a Premier reach reservation.

The planner asks the questions on the checklist. The lineup is defined for Canada, the instant deal route needs the account manager, and the representative cannot share a full membership list, only example channels. The client accepts the lineup for reach on the condition that its refused channels are excluded.

A second line carries a custom list of gardening, yard care and small engine repair channels whose recent uploads show the tasks the tools do, bought in the auction. The plan records the two lines separately. No delivery or result figures are implied.

How does PlacementGraph help when a lineup is not enough?

Frequently asked questions

Is YouTube Select available in Canada?

Display & Video 360's guaranteed instant deals page lists Canada among the countries for in-stream ads on YouTube Select lineups, with an agreed or market rate that requires contacting the account manager. Reach Planner says lineup targeting varies by country, so confirm which lineups exist in Canada with a Google representative.

Can YouTube Select be bought in the auction?

Not as an ordinary auction buy. Reach Planner says YouTube Select ad formats are available for reservation only. Display & Video 360 also offers non-guaranteed instant deals, where the buyer bids a fixed CPM at or above a floor and the inventory is not reserved.

Can a lineup campaign also run on Google video partners?

Yes, unless the buyer removes them. Reach Planner says campaigns targeting both lineups and Google video partners can serve on the selected lineups and all video partners. To target only the lineups, remove video partners on the plan page and check the same setting in the campaign.

Do YouTube TV lineups accept skippable ads?

No. Display & Video 360 Help says YouTube TV and YouTube TV Sports lineups support only bumper and non-skippable ad formats, and that YouTube TV is available only in the United States. Canadian flights need a different lineup.
