YouTube ad placements: how to set channels and videos per campaign type

The short answer

YouTube placement targeting tells an ad group which channels or single videos it may run on. In Google Ads it is set under Content, then Placements, in Video campaigns built for reach or views, while Demand Gen lists placements as contextual targeting. A placement does not confine ads to YouTube, so network settings and other targeting need checking too.

Key takeaways

  • Google Ads takes YouTube channel and video placements at the ad group level of Video campaigns, and Demand Gen describes placements as part of its contextual targeting.
  • A Video campaign ad group that targets YouTube channels or videos needs at least 10 of them before Google Ads will save it.
  • Adding YouTube placements alone may still let ads run across the Google Display Network, so the network setting matters as much as the list.
  • Placements, topics and keywords in one ad group work as any match, so stacking them widens delivery rather than narrowing it.
  • Use channel ID URLs in every placement file, since handles are display identifiers that YouTube can change or reclaim.

What counts as a YouTube placement in Google Ads?

Google defines placements as the locations where ads can appear on YouTube or the Google Display Network. For YouTube there are two kinds. A channel placement lets an ad group serve on eligible videos from that creator. A video placement names one video. Google's Video campaign targeting page (opens in a new tab) lists YouTube channels, YouTube videos, Display Network websites and Display Network apps as the placement types a Video campaign can use.

Definition

Channel ID URL
The permanent address of a YouTube channel, in the form youtube.com/channel/ followed by an ID that starts with UC. It survives handle changes, which makes it the safest way to write a channel into a placement file.

YouTube describes a handle (opens in a new tab) as a short, unique identifier beginning with @ that also becomes the channel's URL, and it reserves the right to change, reclaim or remove a handle at any time. The same help page shows the channel ID URL as the alternative form. Display & Video 360's placement targeting guide (opens in a new tab) gives bulk entry formats for channels (youtube.com/channel/ plus the ID), videos (youtube.com/watch?v= plus the video ID) and legacy user URLs. Keep the ID form as the master record and treat the handle as a label.

Which YouTube campaign types let a buyer set channel and video placements?

Placement targeting depends on the campaign's goal. Google's placement targeting help (opens in a new tab) says placements can be added to ad groups in Video and Display campaigns, and that content targeting can no longer be added to new or existing video campaigns that drive conversions. Those conversion campaigns moved into Demand Gen, which has its own rules. The table below reflects Google's help pages as checked in October 2026.

YouTube placement targeting by Google Ads campaign type, from Google Ads Help (checked October 2026)
Campaign type or subtypePlacement targetingWhat Google's documentation adds
Video reach: Efficient reach and Non-skippable reachOptional at setup: keywords, topics and placementsGoogle does not recommend narrow audience and content targeting on Video reach campaigns because it can restrict reach
Video viewsPlacements through the ad group's Content pageRuns as skippable in-stream, in-feed and Shorts ads on YouTube and video partners
Video action campaigns (history)Positive content targeting removed from early 2023Google upgraded the final Video action campaigns to Demand Gen by April 2026, so none remain to target
Demand GenListed as contextual targeting by topics, placements or keywordsApplies across the Display Network and YouTube; exclusions are documented inconsistently
YouTube Sponsorship (reservation)Bought through a Google representativeBypasses all account level content suitability exclusions and runs on Moderate inventory

The Video campaign objectives page groups Video views, Video reach, ad sequence, engagements and audio reach (opens in a new tab) under one YouTube objective. The Video reach setup guide (opens in a new tab) names keywords, topics and placements as optional targeting for Efficient reach and Non-skippable reach. For subtypes that page does not cover, open the ad group's Content page before promising a client a channel list on that subtype.

How do you add YouTube channel and video placements to a Video campaign?

Adding YouTube placements to one Video campaign ad group

  1. Open the campaign. Select Video campaigns from the workspace bar, then choose the campaign and the ad group that will carry the list.
  2. Go to Content, then Placements. Click the pencil icon to edit the ad group's placements.
  3. Pick the placement type. Choose YouTube channels or YouTube videos; both need a search in the placement box or a pasted URL.
  4. Paste the list in bulk. Click Enter in the placement box and paste one channel ID URL or video URL per line, then add the placements.
  5. Reach the minimum. Google Ads requires at least 10 YouTube channels or videos in the ad group, or the campaign will not save.
  6. Save and recheck. Open the Placements view again and confirm the count matches the approved plan.

Google's add, edit and copy placements guide (opens in a new tab) documents these steps and the 10 placement minimum, and Add targeting to your Video campaigns (opens in a new tab) repeats the minimum. The copy and paste shortcut on the same guide is described for Display campaigns, so for a large channel list moving between Video ad groups, an import file through Google Ads Editor can be cleaner. The Google Ads placement targeting guide covers the Editor columns.

Which settings can widen a YouTube placement list beyond the chosen channels?

Three settings decide whether a channel list behaves like a fence or a suggestion. The first is the network. Google's Video targeting page says that when you add YouTube placements, ads may still run in all eligible locations across the Google Display Network, and that Display Network placements do not limit ads to that network either. The second is video partners: Google video partners (opens in a new tab) are included by default in most Video campaigns and appear in the campaign's Networks section as Video partners on the Display Network.

The third is the mix of content targeting in the ad group. Google's placement help says that when several content targeting methods are used, ads target any of the selected content. A buyer who adds a topic such as home and garden next to 40 chosen channels has not narrowed the campaign to those channels; the ad group can now serve anywhere the topic matches.

Where on YouTube does a channel placement actually serve and report?

A channel placement does not make every YouTube surface behave the same way. Google's Where ads showed report (opens in a new tab) lists placements only for ads on the YouTube Watch page, meaning in-stream and watch next ads; ads elsewhere, such as the Home feed, are reported as youtube.com. Video level reporting applies to YouTube auction and reservation campaigns, and placements under minimum impression or interaction thresholds are left out.

Shorts ads follow a different pattern again, because they appear in a feed between organic Shorts rather than on one creator's watch page. The YouTube Shorts ads guide covers how placements and reporting work there. For in-stream buys, the practical rule is simple: the Watch page is where a channel list has its clearest effect and its clearest proof.

What does a YouTube placement setup look like for one brief?

Fictional example

An impact window installer in Florida sets up channel and video placements

An unnamed installer of hurricane impact windows and doors serving Florida homeowners asks its agency for YouTube ads beside home improvement, storm preparation and home insurance explainer content, in English, with no disaster news or politics. The approved plan holds 42 channels and 12 long walkthroughs of window installations.

The buyer builds a Video reach campaign with the Efficient reach goal and puts the 42 channels, written as channel ID URLs, in one ad group. A Video views campaign carries the 12 video placements, so the single videos can be judged on their own. Neither ad group gets a topic or keyword, because either would widen delivery past the plan.

The brief says YouTube only, so the buyer clears Video partners on the Display Network in both campaigns. Two channels the client rejected go in as account level placement exclusions. After launch the team reads the Where ads showed report for Watch page placements and treats youtube.com rows as feed traffic, not as a missed channel.

How does PlacementGraph prepare YouTube placements for upload?

What should a buyer check before a YouTube placement list goes live?

Pre launch checks for YouTube channel and video placements

  • The campaign subtype accepts placements on the day of setup, confirmed on the ad group's Content page.
  • Every channel is written as a channel ID URL and every video as a full watch URL.
  • Each ad group holds at least 10 YouTube channels or videos.
  • No topic or keyword sits in the same ad group unless the plan intends the wider reach.
  • The Networks setting matches the brief: Video partners on the Display Network on or off by decision, not by default.
  • Channels the client rejected are entered as placement exclusions, not only removed.
  • The plan records which Watch page placements the team expects to see in the Where ads showed report.

Frequently asked questions

Can I target a YouTube channel's handle instead of its ID?

Google Ads lets you search for channels in the placement box, but YouTube says it can change, reclaim or remove a handle at any time, and the channel owner can change it too. Store the channel ID URL as the master record so a renamed channel stays the same placement in every file.

Why does my YouTube campaign show ads on websites I never chose?

Two settings can explain it. Google says YouTube placements alone may still let ads run on the Google Display Network, and Video partners on the Display Network is included by default in most Video campaigns. Check the Networks section and any topics or keywords in the same ad group.

Should channel and video placements share one ad group?

They can, but separate ad groups make delivery easier to read. A channel placement serves across a creator's eligible videos, while a video placement covers one upload, so their volume and context differ. Keeping them apart shows which kind of placement carried the budget and which videos need replacing as they age.

Do YouTube placements work in YouTube Sponsorship campaigns?

Sponsorships are reservation buys arranged through a Google representative, not auction ad groups built from a placement list. Google says they bypass all account level content suitability exclusions and run on Moderate inventory even when Limited is selected, so agree the channel scope with the representative in writing.
