YouTube bumper ads: how to buy six seconds and plan the channels around them

Part of YouTube channel planning

The short answer

A YouTube bumper ad is a non-skippable video ad of 6 seconds or less that plays before, during or after another video. Bumpers are bought on Target CPM, so the advertiser pays per impression, never per view. They run on YouTube and Google video partners through Video reach, reservations and Display & Video 360.

Key takeaways

  • A bumper is 6 seconds at most, with a 5 second minimum, and the viewer cannot skip it.
  • Bumpers are bought per impression on Target CPM and earn no TrueView views, so view based reports and remarketing lists stay empty.
  • Because every impression plays in full beside a chosen video, a bumper channel plan leans on context and suitability more than on watch time.
  • Video ad sequences pair bumpers with longer ads in a fixed order, but they cannot carry a positive channel list.

What is a YouTube bumper ad?

Definition

Bumper ad
Google's video ad formats page (opens in a new tab) describes bumper ads as non-skippable video ads lasting between 5 and 6 seconds that play before, during or after another video, and calls them a quick message that can't be skipped to raise awareness or reinforce other ads.

Display & Video 360's bumper ad campaigns page (opens in a new tab) gives the same rule from the buying side: videos must be 6 seconds or shorter and hosted on YouTube, and viewers cannot skip them. Google Ads decides the format from the file itself. Its Video reach setup guide (opens in a new tab) says videos up to 6 seconds become bumper ads, 7 to 15 seconds become standard non-skippable ads, and 16 to 30 seconds become the TV screen non-skippable version. A 7 second cut is therefore not a long bumper; it is a different format with a different place in the plan, covered in the non-skippable ads guide.

Six seconds holds one idea. A bumper brief names the single thing a viewer should remember, the brand cue that carries it, and the longer ad it points back to.

How are YouTube bumper ads bought and billed?

Bumpers use Target CPM. The advertiser sets the average it will pay per thousand impressions, and Google optimizes bids toward that average, so some impressions cost more and some less. No view is ever billed, because Google's CPV bidding help (opens in a new tab) says bumper ads are not eligible for TrueView views. Display & Video 360 adds that views and view related metrics are not available for bumpers at all.

Where do YouTube bumper ads appear?

Google says bumper ads appear on YouTube videos and across websites and apps running on Google video partners, and the formats page adds that some bumpers may also appear on YouTube TV, depending on eligibility. Because a bumper plays inside a video the viewer chose, it serves on the watch page and in YouTube Playables game breaks, not in the Shorts feed or the Home feed. That puts bumpers on the inventory a channel list reaches most directly.

The account controls reach that inventory too. Google's content suitability coverage table (opens in a new tab) shows that in-stream video supports inventory types, content type exclusions, placement exclusions, excluded content keywords and excluded content themes, while digital content labels do not apply to YouTube. And the Where ads showed report (opens in a new tab) lists channels and videos for ads on the Watch page, which is where bumpers run. A bumper buy on a channel list can be checked placement by placement after launch.

How should a channel plan differ for bumper ads?

A long skippable ad is judged partly by whether people choose to keep watching. A bumper is not: every impression plays in full, and the only signal is that it ran beside a given video. That shifts the weight of the channel plan from attention to adjacency. Each channel on a bumper list should be one the brand is happy to appear beside for six unavoidable seconds, at the start, middle or end of the creator's video.

Five adjustments for a bumper channel list

  1. Hold suitability to the brand's strictest level. A viewer cannot skip a bumper, so the ad plays beside the content without a skip; screen recent uploads with that in mind.
  2. Favor channels with steady watch page volume. Bumpers serve on in-stream inventory, so a channel that mostly posts Shorts adds little to a bumper list.
  3. Write the list as channel IDs and exclusions together. In-stream inventory accepts placement exclusions, so the refused channels belong in the same file.
  4. Set a frequency cap or a frequency target. Video reach campaigns offer impression caps per day, week or month, and Target frequency supports 2 to 4 a week for bumper and skippable in-stream mixes.
  5. Plan reporting on impressions. Ask for impressions, unique reach, frequency and viewable impressions by channel, since bumpers produce no TrueView views.

One more difference concerns size. A bumper buy pays per impression and aims for breadth, so a bumper list may be wider than the list for a long explainer, provided every added channel still meets the suitability bar. The YouTube channel list guide covers tiering and sizing; for bumpers, the adjacent tier tends to matter more than it does for view based buys.

When do bumper ads pair well with longer formats?

Google's own guidance points bumpers toward company. Display & Video 360 says bumper ads often work well when run along with related YouTube ads, and the Google Ads formats page describes them as a way to raise awareness or reinforce other ads. Google's video ad sequencing help (opens in a new tab) turns that into four templates.

Google's video ad sequence templates and the role a bumper plays in each (checked October 2026)
TemplateOrder Google describesWhere a bumper fits
Introduce and reinforceA long video ad, then a short video adThe closing reminder after the story
Prompt and inspireA short video ad, then a long video adThe opening hook before the full message
Attract and directShort, then long, then another short video adBoth the hook and the call to action
Engage and differentiateFour short video ads telling parts of one story or one story from different anglesEvery step, as a series

Pairing outside a sequence is simpler and keeps the list in force: a Video reach campaign for the bumper and a Video views campaign for the long ad, both on the same approved channels. Google does not guarantee that the same person sees both, so describe the pair as shared context, not as a controlled order. The YouTube ad formats guide maps which subtype carries each longer format.

What does a bumper plan look like for one brief?

Fictional example

A Quebec burger chain uses bumpers to remind, and a longer ad to explain

An unnamed quick service burger and poutine chain with restaurants in Montreal and Quebec City wants a French language YouTube campaign in Quebec for the launch of a new menu item, beside food, cooking, local humor and hockey commentary channels, with no political or crime content.

The planner splits the creative by job. A 30 second French video explains the new item and runs as skippable in-stream ads in a Video views campaign. Three 6 second French bumpers, each built on one close-up of the item and the chain's logo, run in a Video reach campaign set to Non-skippable reach with a weekly impression cap. Both campaigns use the same approved list of French language channels, written as channel IDs, plus an exclusion list of refused channels.

Because burgers fall under food and beverage, a category YouTube bars from content set as made for kids, the account excludes the Content Suitable for Families content theme, which includes made for kids videos. Reporting for the bumper campaign is set on impressions, reach and frequency by channel, while the long ad is read on TrueView views and view rate.

How does PlacementGraph help plan channels for short ads?

What should be checked before bumper ads go live?

Bumper launch checklist

  • Every bumper file runs 5 to 6 seconds, so Google Ads classifies it as a bumper and not as a standard non-skippable ad.
  • The brand cue appears in the first seconds and the message works without sound.
  • The campaign subtype is Efficient reach, Non-skippable reach, Target frequency or a sequence, chosen on purpose.
  • The channel list and its exclusions are loaded, and the Video partners setting matches the brief.
  • A frequency cap or frequency target is set for the flight.
  • The report template uses impressions, reach and frequency, with no CPV or view rate columns for bumper lines.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bumper ad be longer than 6 seconds?

No. Google lists 6 seconds as the length, with a 5 second minimum, and Display & Video 360 requires bumpers to be 6 seconds or shorter. In Google Ads Video reach campaigns a 7 to 15 second video is treated as a standard non-skippable ad instead, which carries different creative and reporting rules.

Do bumper ads add to a video's public view count?

Yes. Google says bumper and non-skippable formats now contribute to the YouTube public view count, though not to TrueView views, and that previously only skippable formats did. Public views are not billed and say nothing about paid delivery, so keep them out of cost calculations.

Can bumper ads be bought on a reservation?

Yes. Google's format table lists Reservations among the compatible campaign types for bumpers, and Display & Video 360 offers bumpers through YouTube instant deals. Reserved buys follow the terms agreed with Google, so confirm in writing which channels or content groups the reservation covers before building a channel plan around it.

Should bumper and long ads use the same creative look?

It helps a pairing work. A bumper that repeats the opening frame, color and logo treatment of the long ad gives viewers a visible link between the two. Google's sequencing templates assume the short and long ads tell one story, so brief both cuts together rather than adapting a bumper late.
