What are casino streaming channels on YouTube, and should brands avoid them?

Part of YouTube brand safety

The short answer

Casino streaming channels broadcast or edit sessions of online slots, table games and sweepstakes casinos, and can sit beside gaming content. YouTube age restricts content that promotes or depicts online gambling and bars links to uncertified sites. Google Ads has no gambling content theme, so a non gambling brand finds and excludes these channels by name.

Key takeaways

  • YouTube age restricts content that promotes or depicts online gambling and social or sweepstakes casinos, including certified sites, and does not allow promises of guaranteed returns.
  • Age restricted videos are not viewable to users under 18 or signed out, but they can still use ads, so casino streams remain ad inventory.
  • Casino streams reach gaming plans through automatic placements and through channels that mix games with gambling sessions.
  • Google's content themes list has no gambling theme, so exclusions run on named channels and videos.

What are casino streaming channels on YouTube?

Definition

Casino streaming channel
A YouTube channel whose live streams, edited videos or Shorts show a host playing online casino games, such as slots, roulette or blackjack, or sweepstakes and social casino games, with the balance and bets shown on screen.

Google's gambling and games policy (opens in a new tab) gives two definitions that help sort these channels. Gambling is staking something of value on the outcome of events or processes determined by an element of chance. Social casino games are online simulated gambling style games where there is no opportunity to win something of value. On screen, the two can look identical: the same reels, the same win animations, the same chat reactions.

How do YouTube policies treat gambling content?

YouTube's regulated goods policy (opens in a new tab) handles gambling in three tiers. It does not allow facilitating access to an online gambling or sports betting site that is not certified, or promising viewers guaranteed returns via online gambling, whether or not the site is certified. It age restricts content that promotes or depicts online gambling and social or sweepstakes casinos, including certified sites. It may make exceptions for some betting content, such as sports betting from Google certified providers during a live sporting event, which may be allowed for all audiences.

Why do gambling streams appear in gaming plans?

Three routes bring them in. First, the vocabulary overlaps: streams, wins, levels, chat, bonus rounds. Second, a gaming creator can run slot sessions between game streams, so a channel chosen for its game content can carry gambling videos too. Third, Google Ads reaches channels the buyer never picked. Google's Where ads showed guide (opens in a new tab) lists placements reached via other targeting methods as automatic placements, such as an ad shown to a targeted demographic while they watch a video the buyer did not choose.

Topic and keyword targeting add to the drift. Google's contextual targeting page (opens in a new tab) says keywords and topic targeting act as a hint on YouTube, while placement targeting is fully supported. A plan built on a gaming topic with no channel list leaves the choice to the system, and a live slot stream with high watch time fits that topic as well as any game.

How can a buyer spot gambling content in a channel?

Gambling signals on a YouTube channel

  • Titles or thumbnails name slots, bonus buys, max wins, multipliers or stake amounts.
  • Descriptions carry promo codes, affiliate links or sign up offers for casinos or sweepstakes sites.
  • Several recent videos are age restricted, with no other mature theme to explain it.
  • Live stream replays show a balance, bet size or win counter on screen.
  • The channel's links section or pinned comments point to gambling or betting sites.
  • Shorts are cut from big win moments rather than from gameplay.

Auditing a live gaming campaign for gambling placements

  1. Open Where ads showed at video level. Select the channels, then View Details, since one gaming channel can hold both game and casino videos.
  2. Read the content suitability report for Shorts. Google's report guide (opens in a new tab) says it shows content before and after Shorts ads, only for placements above minimum thresholds.
  3. Tag each placement. Mark game only, mixed or gambling led, with the titles as evidence.
  4. Exclude by the right unit. Gambling led channels go out as channels; a mixed channel's gambling videos can go out by video ID.
  5. Recheck monthly. Mixed channels can shift toward gambling, so date each review.

Should non gambling brands exclude these channels?

It depends on the brand, and the decision should be written before the plan, not after a screenshot. A brand selling to families or to young gamers has strong reasons to exclude casino streams, since the content is age restricted and Google restricts gambling ads on made for kids content. An adult brand with a broad tolerance may accept sports talk with betting segments but not slot sessions. Neither answer fits all clients, so record the stance with the reason.

Gambling stance by brand type (planning scale, with each option's tradeoff)
Brand typeStance on casino streamsGainCost
Family, toy and youth gaming brandsExclude channels and videosClear separation from age restricted gamblingLoses mixed channels with good game content
General gaming hardware and softwareExclude gambling led channels; review mixed onesKeeps game streams in reachNeeds video level review time
Adult beverage and entertainment brandsCase by case, sports talk kept, slot sessions outWider reach among adultsHarder to explain to the client
Financial and banking brandsExclude, with guaranteed return claims in viewAvoids adjacency to gambling promisesSmaller sports reach

The controls are manual. Google's content suitability page (opens in a new tab) lists excluded content themes such as Games (mature), Health (sensitive), News (recent), Politics and Religion, but no gambling theme. Exclusions run through placements: Google's exclusion guide (opens in a new tab) lets advertisers exclude YouTube channels and videos at account, campaign or ad group level, by URL or video ID, and schedule lists from Google Sheets, HTTPS or SFTP. The Live streaming videos content type removes all live streams, not only casino ones.

What does a casino stream review look like on a real brief?

Fictional example

A game controller maker clears casino streams from an Indiana plan

An unnamed maker of wireless game controllers wants YouTube reach in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville, in English, on console and PC gaming channels. Its tolerance excludes gambling content, and its buyers include teenagers.

The planner reviews the newest 25 uploads on each candidate channel. Two streamers run weekly slot sessions between game streams; their game videos stay on the list and their slot videos go on a video exclusion list. One channel whose recent uploads are mostly big win Shorts with casino promo codes is excluded as a channel.

After the first week, the Where ads showed report reveals an automatic placement on a sweepstakes casino stream. It joins the exclusion list with its title as evidence, and the review date is logged.

How does PlacementGraph flag gambling content in a YouTube plan?

Gambling is one of the categories PlacementGraph scores on its own when it builds a YouTube plan.

Frequently asked questions

Are sweepstakes casino streams treated the same as real money casino streams?

On YouTube, content that promotes or depicts social or sweepstakes casinos is age restricted, as online gambling content is. Google's ads policy treats social casino games, with no opportunity to win something of value, apart from gambling. For a brand's tolerance the screen looks the same, so a plan can treat them together.

Can a casino stream earn ads if it is age restricted?

YouTube says age restricted videos can use ads to monetize, though some may have limited or no ads monetization because some advertisers prefer family friendly content. Age restriction removes viewers under 18 and signed out viewers, not the ad inventory itself.

Do sports betting segments on a sports channel count as casino streaming?

Not by format. YouTube may allow sports betting content from Google certified providers, and promotion of certified sites during a live sporting event, for all audiences. A sports talk channel with odds segments sits in a different tier from a slot session, and the brand's tolerance can treat them apart.

Can an excluded casino channel return to a campaign?

An excluded channel stays out of the campaigns the exclusion covers, but new casino channels appear and mixed channels change. Placement exclusions apply at account, campaign or ad group level, and automatic placements can still surface new channels, so the report review is repeated on a schedule.
